Gum evaluation
A gum evaluation is a visit to find out how healthy the gums and the bone around your teeth are. It is for anyone whose dentist or hygienist has noticed bleeding, loose teeth, deep pockets or receding gums, and for anyone who wants a second look.
Measuring is the heart of it
Healthy gums fit snugly around each tooth. Where they have loosened, the space between tooth and gum gets deeper, and that space is what Dr. Montes measures. The numbers tell her where the disease is and how far it has gone.
She shows you your own numbers, and a later visit can compare them.

What happens
Usually one visit, about an hour.
- 01
Step 1: Talk
Dr. Montes asks what you've noticed and what your dentist has told you.
- 02
Step 2: Measure
She measures the space between each tooth and its gum in six places, and notes bleeding and any loose teeth.
- 03
Step 3: Look closer
X-rays and photos if she needs them, or the ones your dentist already has.
- 04
Step 4: Plan
She explains what she found and gives you a written plan and estimate to take home.
Comfort, choices and care
Comfort
Measuring is done without numbing. You may feel pressure and some tenderness where the gums are inflamed. Say so and we slow down.
If you wait
Gum disease usually doesn't hurt until it is advanced. Left alone it can loosen teeth. Dr. Montes will tell you what she sees and how quickly it tends to change.
Risks and after-care
There is little risk in an evaluation. The gums can bleed a little when they're measured, and X-rays use a small amount of radiation, which the dentist weighs before taking them.
How it's billed
The evaluation is billed as an exam and X-rays. Your written estimate comes before treatment, and we can check your plan's benefits first.

Questions about the evaluation
Do I need X-rays?
Not always. If your dentist has taken recent ones we can ask for copies. Dr. Montes decides what she needs.
Will I be treated at the first visit?
Usually not. The first visit is for measuring and explaining. If you want treatment started the same day, ask when you schedule.
Can I bring someone with me?
Yes. Many people bring a family member to hear the plan.
