Deep cleaning
A deep cleaning, called scaling and root planing, cleans the tooth roots below the gumline, where a regular cleaning doesn't reach. It is for people whose gum measurements show pockets with buildup in them.
What happens
Usually two to four visits, one section of the mouth at a time.
- 01
Step 1: Numbing
We numb one section of your mouth and check that it is numb before we begin.
- 02
Step 2: Cleaning
Ivette or Dr. Montes removes buildup from the roots with hand and ultrasonic instruments, and smooths the root surface.
- 03
Step 3: Home plan
You learn how to clean around the treated teeth, and what to expect over the next days.
- 04
Step 4: Recheck
A few weeks later we measure again to see how the gums have responded and decide what comes next.
Comfort, choices and care
Comfort
A local anesthetic numbs the area. You will feel pressure and hear the instruments. Raise a hand and we stop. We don't offer sedation in this office.
If you wait
Buildup below the gumline keeps the gums inflamed. Gum disease can be managed but it tends to return if cleaning and checkups stop. Treatment is usually easier earlier.
Risks and after-care
Gums are tender and may bleed for a few days, and teeth can feel sensitive to cold. Call us for swelling that grows, a fever or bleeding that won't stop.
How it's billed
Each section is billed as its own procedure, with its fee in your written estimate. Many dental plans pay part of it; Humberto can ask your plan first.

Questions about deep cleaning
Is it the same as a regular cleaning?
No. A regular cleaning works above the gumline. A deep cleaning works below it, with numbing, over more than one visit.
Will I need surgery afterward?
Sometimes. If pockets stay deep after the recheck, Dr. Montes explains the options, including laser and traditional surgery.
How soon can I eat?
Once the numbness wears off. Soft food is easier for the first day or two.
Practice limited to periodontics
